Infinity Ward To Launch A New Multiplayer Warzone As An "Extension Of The Modern Warfare 2 Universe"
The "Warzone 2.0" is coming sometime after the remake's October 28 release.
We got a new campaign trailer today for the remake sequel Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but also news that a "Warzone 2.0" will release sometime after the remake's October 28 release. It will be an "extension of the Modern Warfare 2 universe," bringing all-new progression and inventories.
Developer Infinity Ward announced Warzone 2.0 shortly after the trailer reveal (below). "October 28 marks a new beginning for Call of Duty, starting with the release of Modern Warfare 2. Soon after, a wholly new Warzone will launch as an extension of the Modern Warfare 2 universe." As of this writing, there isn't an official date from Infinity Ward, so it's unclear how long players have to wait before the next Battle Royale iteration rolls around.
The statement continues: "Warzone 2.0 will feature new Modern Warfare 2 content and systems with brand new progression and inventories." Infinity assured current Warzone players that the 2020 version will continue on as a separate experience.
More details on what that means outside of more progression checks and new inventories will come later, but this does confirm that Warzone players won't be carrying over anything from the current version to 2.0, evening the playing field.
In other news, Call of Duty makes an unexpected return to Steam, allowing players to purchase the upcoming game on launch. For those not PC players, Modern Warfare 2 is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on October 28. Pre-orders are now live.
