If You Play Path Of Exile Via Steam, You May Want To Reset Your Password
GGG warned players they may have been hit by a phishing attempt.
Over the weekend, Grinding Gear Games posted a notice on Twitter telling Path of Exile players – specifically those on Steam – to consider resetting their passwords. According to the post, a “malicious news post” with a phishing link in it was published to the MMO ARPG’s Steam Page. It was caught fairly early, but anyone who followed the link in it will want to change their login information. It may be worth doing that whether you clicked the link or not. Just to be safe.

According to a report on PC Gamer, while GGG didn’t share information about the actual post, players have. One Steam user noted in comments that the link led to a fake registration for the Path of Exile 2 beta test URL that included “pathofexiie” rather than the standard pathofexile.com. At first glance, it could have been easy to miss.
That said, most long-time gamers know the risks of clicking on links in emails and on forums and the like. While you might not expect the same risk in an area that generally only delivers official news from the developer, it might be worth doing what I do when I get links in emails from “official” sites. Type what you know to be the true URL into the browser yourself. Yeah. It’s an extra step, but still fewer steps than having to recover your account or deal with a stolen identity.
