Ghosts 'n Goblins Online (Maybe) Coming To Steam
Here's a real blast from the past. 8-bit console legend Ghosts 'n Goblins is trying to make a comeback, in the form of a F2P online game that's currently up for consideration on Steam Greenlight.
Originally released over 25 years ago for the NES, Commodore 64, and Amiga, Ghosts 'n Goblins was a sidescrolling action platformer known for its punishing difficulty and its underwear-clad, lance-chucking knight, Arthur. Several sequels and other installments followed, all the way up to 2010's iOS-based Ghosts 'n Goblins: Gold Knights.
The series has been in the hands of Capcom since its inception, but it looks like Korean developer Seed9 is handling GnG Online's development. Here's what you get if you click on the "Online" link on Seed9's website. Not exactly what I'd call a strong portfolio.
All that aside, it's a curious direction for a game that, if videos are any indication, looks like it doesn't vary too far from the sidescrolling action of the original, albeit with more players and apparently a somewhat easier difficulty curve -- though the details boast of the "Demon Dimension," for those with a yen for masochism. "Skill-based PvP" is also touted.
So how will free-to-play work within the structure of the game? One would imagine that alternate characters, weapons, armor, and other upgrades would be available for purchase, as well as for in-game loot, but until we know the details, the specter of pay-to-win is scarier than any potential ghost or goblin.
