Game Awards 2022: Digital Extremes And Airship Syndicate Reveal F2P Action MMORPG Wayfinder, And You Could Play As Early As Next Week
Grab a Gloom Dagger and break open rifts in the Gloom and take your friends for some dungeon delving.
Eight months ago we learned that Airship Syndicate, makers of Runied King: A League of Legends Story, was hiring for what looked like an MMORPG project. More recently, we learned that Digital Extremes, makers of Warframe, were not only making an MMORPG called Soulframe, but they were also working with Airship Syndicate on their project.
At tonight's Video Game Awards, we finally got to see what the two companies were working on and we've got to say, Wayfinder certainly has our curiosity piqued.
Wayfinder has a sort of "hop into dungeons and run them with friends" feeling. Looking at the reveal trailer, we are introduced to the Gloom, an invading threat that needs to be put down and, luckily, us players have a handy Gloom Dagger that allows us to group up, open up dungeon-like "Lost Zones", and take the fight to the Gloom.
In Lost Zones, Wayfinders can use magic, awesome weapons, and more in zones modified to players' liking with modifiers that bring changes to difficulty and other factors. Craft weapons, kill baddies, and enhance your personal apartment. You can even be a part of a neighborhood as the entire game revolves around players as groups.
“Four years ago when we set out on this journey with Airship Syndicate to build Wayfinder we had high hopes and expectations,'' said Richard Browne, head of external projects at Digital Extremes. “The World they have created, the characters that inhabit it, and the ever-changing adventures players can encounter truly live up to the dreams we held. I can’t wait for players to band together and help push back the Gloom from Evenor.”
If you're looking forward to the game, you're going to have to chill for a bit as the game is releasing on PC and consoles, but it won't be until Spring of 2023 for Early Access with a full launch in Fall of 2023.
That said, you COULD get lucky and get a shot at playing the game next week in an early playtest. The test kicks off on December 13th and you can register to try and get into that test on the Wayfinder site.
Wayfinder will be free-to-play and will "embrace Digital Extremes' free-and-fair monetization" strategy. Basically, if you are ok with Warframe's monetization, we expect you'll be ok with Wayfinder's monetization, too.
Here's the revealed trailer for ya!
