Funcom Picks Up IP House, Nabs Full Control Over Conan And Other Properties
Conan the acquisition.
With Age of Conan, Conan Exiles, and even Conan Chop-Chop under its banner, Funcom has long been known as "the Conan company." If you wanted a Conan video game experience, it always seemed to go through Norway (via China).
That's going to be the way of things for the foreseeable future, as Funcom has announced the acquisition of Cabinet Group, which holds the rights to several intellectual properties, including Mutant Year Zero, Solomon Kane, Mutant Chronicles ... and yes, Conan the Barbarian.
Cabinet's portfolio will be incorporated into a Funcom subsidiary called Heroic Signatures. The deal will see not only video games be produced -- Funcom CEO Rui Casais said that his company is working on "an unannounced game which will combine many of the characters in the Robert E. Howard universe" -- but also Conan comic books by Marvel and a series on Netflix.
Cabinet Group Co-founder and CEO Fredrik Malmberg will stay on as president of Heroic Signatures, saying that he took his company "as far as we could as an independent studio." He gave us some idea of what could be to come, saying:
"What Fortnite has done with The Avengers, for instance, or the impact a live in-game concert can have on awareness. We are looking forward to sitting down with other entertainment companies who share our vision and wish to take part in the exciting journey we have ahead."
What is best in life? To break it down on the dance floor, of course.
