Frost Giant Will Be Giving An Additional Free Hero To Stormgate Ultimate Backers Following Upset Over Monetized Day One Hero
Players thought backing at the Ultimate level meant getting everything available at early access launch.
Two days ago, Frost Giant launched the RTS Stormgate into Steam Early Access. While the game is intended to be free-to-play, this stage of Early Access is paid, running players $25. Of course, many would-be players backed the game ahead of time on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, some dropping as much as $360 to back the game.
Part of the reason players were willing to pay so much is that they believed they would receive all the content Frost Giant had created in time for Early Access. They did not expect one of the game’s Heroes to be a Day 1 purchase. As it turned out, the developer elected to make the Hero “Warz” just that, and backers aren’t happy about it. Nor are those who elected to buy the Ultimate Early Access Pack direct from Steam for $60.
Today, Frost Giant addressed this issue in a post sharing what they’ve learned from Early Access so far, stating that they “tried to make the content in [the] Kickstarter bundles clear during the campaign, but [they] understand that many players looked at [the] “Ultimate bundles on Kickstarter (and Indiegogo) as a path towards purchasing all of the gameplay content [they’d] have available for [their] Early Access release”.
To make amends, the team has announced they will grant the next paid Hero to Ultimate backers and anyone who purchases the pack on Steam. This is to make backers “feel rewarded” and meant as a “thank you”. And no, Warz is not the Hero players will be getting for free. The reason is that some players have already purchased that particular Hero.
For now, the game has mixed reviews overall and the Ultimate pack is filled with negative reviews. It will be interesting to see if this changes that for them. That said, there were other reasons for the negative reviews, such as the ones Mike posted about on launch day.
