Fractured Alignment

Good or evil or something in between? That's a decision you'll have to make in Fractured Online, as today's blog post from Dynamight Studios describes the game's alignment system in detail. Each character will have an alignment -- good, neutral, or evil -- based on their karma score. Negative karma means you're evil, while positive karma means you're good or neutral. Wildfolk are always good, demons evil, and humans can be any alignment.

When you're good, you can't take hostile actions against good or neutral characters, but targeting evil characters will earn you positive karma. Neutral characters can take on evil or neutral characters, while evil characters can steal or murder to their dark hearts' content -- with the caveat that, as previously mentioned, anyone can fight them with no repurcussions.

Your karma score can be changed not only by your actions against other players but by what PvE monsters you take out. Kill good creatures to lose karma and kill evil ones to gain karma, with some race-based exceptions. The gods you choose to worship can also affect your alignment.

Your alignment has an impact on what planets you can comfortably visit. In the beautiful and peaceful world of Arboreus, good and neutral characters are free to explore as much as they want, while evil characters will find their vital energy drained the longer they stay. Syndesia is the "neutral" planet, where peace exists within cities and positive-karma characters can fulfill bounties on wrongdoers, while Tartaros is "all fun and flames," with free-for-all PvP enabled at all times.

It's an interesting approach for separating PvE and PvP -- not by server options but by in-game locations. It's reminiscent of the approach Eve Online takes, with its varying levels of security in regions of space. That's worked out pretty well for CCP Games, so maybe Dynamight is seeking to emulate that success. It could do worse.
