Final Fantasy XIV Is Under Attack By Third Party, Square Enix Advises Changing Password "Immediately"
The third party is aiming to hijack the Square Enix Account Management System.
Tonight, Square Enix updated Final Fantasy XIV players that they're "experiencing an attack by a third party...attempting to gain access to the Square Enix Account Management System." By using email addresses and passwords obtained from online services of other companies, they are trying to hijack the system, in which Square advises players to change their password "immediately" to avoid their account becoming compromised.
As you might expect, using the same email address and password combination for your Square Enix account could cause some issues down the line, especially if a third party gains unauthorized access to your account. Square states there is "still a high risk of your account [becoming] compromised if your password contains easily discernible patterns or sequences of characters, such as your date of birth." To counteract that possible reality, they advise resetting your Square Enix password.
They are currently "mitigating the effect of the attack by restricting access to accounts that [they] believe may have been compromised," which you will know if you're a part of that pile when Square sends emailed instructions to reset your password. There's that route and the one-time passwords with temporary verifications to authenticate log-in. If they continue to experience a rise in unauthorized access attempts, they will require password resets for all Square Enix accounts.
