FFXIV Players Teleported To Jail After Using Mods During Live Broadcast
What is the future of FFXIV and third-party tools moving forward from these events?
It isn't rare for large game studios to hold a strong disdain for mods and third-party tools. The reason behind this could stem anywhere from protecting an IP, making sure the game is fair for all, or even simply being overly prideful of a game.
The most recent controversy comes from Final Fantasy XIV. Naoki Yoshida, FFXIV producer and director, reiterated recently his stance on why third-party tools are used in FFXIV and explained it was most likely because FFXIV's in-game HUD was not providing all the details that players may need during raids.
In response, Yoshida said the team is currently working on incorporating some of these features that they find useful, but it could take some time. It seems that the FFXIV team is not as concerned with the use of third-party tools as much as they are trying to create a fair atmosphere in-game when it comes to newly released raids and other events that the use of these third-party tools may give an unfair advantage.
Following this, FFXIV players have already been sent to in-game jail to be reprimanded for the use of these mods live on stream. On the morning of May 9, a Final Fantasy XIV player known as Hiroro was using on-screen mods when he was teleported suddenly to Mordion Gaol, a dungeon that is meant to discipline players.
Then, the very next day, it happened again. This time player, Bagel Goose, was teleported away to Mordion Gaol after also using visible mods during his live broadcast. “I don’t think I should stream this,” Bagel Goose began. “I think I might be banned.”
Indeed they were. While video of the streams (yes, they were live when it happened) have since been taken down, we do have a few screenshots courtesy of the internet!
What do you think? Do you believe that third-party tools shouldn’t be used and only what the game provides should, or do you believe it’s up to the player how to play the game?
