FFXIV And Dawntrail Keep Making Square Enix Bank, But Overall The Company's Sales And Profits Are Down

Say what you will about the reception of FFXIV's Dawntrail expansion, and I have, but the MMORPG's sales continue to lead the way when it comes to Square Enix's full financial picture. With the company releasing their financial results through December 31st, we see more of the same. Actually, Dawntrail has led to even higher sales and revenue than previous reports. That's not surprising since a year-over-year comparison isn't exactly fair when one year has an expansion release, but even comparing to previous expansion releases, Dawntrail is pulling down big numbers.

As an entire department, the MMO side of SE hit $288.4 million which is a 26.4% increase, but the company as a whole saw drops in both sales and net profits, down 3.5% and 7.7% respectively versus the previous year. That said, the HD Games portion of the business was more profitable this time around due to reductions in advertising costs and Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D doing better than the company anticipated it would do.

If HD Games and MMOs seem to be doing well, where do things decline? That would be the mobile and PC portion of the business, which was down almost 60% in profitability compared to last year.

Making a little shy of $162 million in profits isn't too shabby and seems to be right in line with Square Enix's projections as they won't be adjusting their forecast.
