Fairy Tale CCG Storybook Brawl Creator Good Luck Games Bought By Crypto Firm FTX
FTX wants to offer "crypto-as-a-service" to companies looking to add NFTs to games.
Storybook Brawl was a free-to-play CCG that used a twisted fairy tale theme and was pretty well-received both by gamers as a whole and the MMOBomb crew alike. I say "was," not because the game is technically dead -- it averages around 1,000 players on Steam -- but because it's going to be effectively dead to many of its players, now that developer and publisher Good Luck Games has been bought by cryptocurrency company FTX, as reported by ZDNet.
FTX's Head of Gaming Partnerships Steve Sadin said he knows that "trust needs to be earned and re-earned" with "smart and very critical" gamers regarding the use of NFTs. However, interviewer Michael Gariffo noted that "details of exactly how [Storybook Brawl's] cards will be enjoined to blockchain technology remains somewhat up in the air" and "no one was willing to commit to either a format or timeframe for when the public might see the first fruits of this new union." Nonetheless, the two companies hope that they "will convince gamers that NFTs and crypto content can be something more than a scam or money grab." Go ahead and read all that a few more times; we'll wait.
The deal is FTX's first attempt at in-house game development, but don't expect this to be the last time we hear about the company poking its fingers into gaming. In another of Gariffo's articles about the company, he mentioned that the newly formed FTX gaming division will offer a "'crypto-as-a-service' platform through which gaming companies can launch tokens and offer support for NFTs." We bet you can't wait for that news.
The first article correctly points out that Storybook Brawl has an 88% positive rating on Steam -- or at least it did at the time of publication. Review-bombing is underway, and that number's down to 86% in just a few hours, with 46 negative reviews countering eight positives so far today. Expect that to drop even further in the future, as more players learn that this fairy tale is unlikely to have a happy ending.
