EverQuest 2's Norrathian Armory May Not Be P2W Yet, But Players Worry It Could Be Very Soon
P2W is always in the eye of the beholder, but when you start selling gear, it's easy to see where things are going.
This past weekend saw Everquest 2 (and OG EQ) take to San Diego Comic Con and reminisce about the MMORPG's past, talk about the Year of Darkpaw's continuation, and drop a few details about upcoming events. However, this past week also saw the addition of a new feature in game that isn't getting the best of receptions so far.
Darkpaw Games and Daybreak Games introduced the Norrathian Armory to players this week. On the surface, it reads like a neat addition. If you unlock certain gear on your min character, it'll flag that gear to be available for your alts to buy from a new vendor. Dope, right? You don't have to grind the same things over and over, you gear up your alts a little easier, and everyone's happy, right?
Wrong.
Why? Because the gear in the Norrathian Armory can only be purchased with Daybreak Cash (DBC). Each piece is 999 DBC (about $10) and it's character specific. Ok, granted the gear is only 460 resolve, so for those unfamiliar we aren't talking about mega high-end gear here. You can get it relatively quickly by playing your alts (as players have pointed out on the forums already), but those same players are very worried that this may just be a stepping stone to EverQuest 2 taking things too far soon.
This isn't the first time in the last 12 months that players have felt a bit miffed by cash shop decisions the MMO has been making lately. Hell, this isn't even the second time. It always seems to circle around to trying to get just a little more cash out of what is a stable but smaller player base. It also doesn't help that a late game charm with a buff that is available each expansion (and usually useful early in the following expansion) will be in this system, too.
We saw EverQuest walk back the loot box that bypassed lockouts, so maybe there will be a change made here...at least one can hope. I'll admit that I am not a deep EQ2 player, but this really seems like a system that should just be an in-game currency thing.
(Thanks to MMOBomber Manafizzle for the heads up!)
