Star Trek Online And Neverwinter Teams At Cryptic Studios Hit With Layoffs As Part Of Embracer Cuts
The developer is will be overseen by DECA Games as part of restructuring.
Another Embracer-owned studio is going through layoffs as part of the company’s restructuring. Today, members of Cryptic’s staff, including (now former) Narrative Director Winter Mullenix and Senior Community Manager Mike Fatum posted about the layoffs on LinkedIn.
These layoffs, which were later confirmed by a spokesperson for the studio in an email to GamesIndustry, follow layoffs and studio closures that have been happening since June. These include layoffs at Gearbox, Zen Studios, and Crystal Dynamics, among others, as well as the closure of Volition Games.
According to the statement from Cryptic, today’s layoffs are part of that ongoing “comprehensive restructuring program”. The statement also noted that Cryptic will now be operating under DECA Games. Cryptic also added that they will provide job assistance and support to those who have been affected by the layoffs.
We'll keep following this story and hope to learn more about the scale of the layoffs and the potential impact to MMORPGs like Neverwinter and Star Trek Online. We've reached out to the company and will update this piece with any response we receive.
