EA's Skate Series Returns As Free-To-Play Game After Over A Decade Of No New Titles
The game is described by devs as an "authentic evolution" of the franchise.
Full Circle, the studio heading the development of EA's new highly-anticipated Skate game, has announced the title will be a free-to-play, live-service game with cross-platform cross-progression features. It's coming to PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and even mobile platforms, but the latter is still in early development.
The game's official title is "Skate." with the added period and still doesn't have a release date. The devs explained during "The Board Room" discussion video (below) that they're only announcing a date "when it's ready." However, Creative Director Chris "Cuz" Parry did describe where the game stands within the series. He states it's not a remake, sequel, reboot, or remaster of the original Skate, but rather an "authentic evolution" set to bring something new to the table. As a live-service title, Full Circle plans to add new gameplay content and elements to the game based on player feedback.
The devs also confirmed microtransactions would be in the game to fund its continued development but assured most of them were cosmetics. Players will have to wait and see what that entails as more information is released, but the devs pointed at Apex Legends as an indication of their monetization scheme. If you're excited to see how this game turns out and can't wait to play, you can try your luck at signing up for the "pre-pre-pre-alpha" look of Skate..
