Apex Legends Monetization Future

Apex Legends is in for more changes according to statements made by EA CEO Andrew Wilson during the company’s most recent earnings call. During the call, he noted that the shooter game is a “compelling franchise”. However, being compelling doesn’t make money alone. Every game developer wants more people playing the game, as more people should mean more money, so he goes on to add that in order to drive growth “large systematic change is required”.

Part of the reason for this statement is that the battle pass the company added to Apex Legends didn’t increase revenue in the way they expected. Although the earnings call didn’t state exactly how much revenue was brought in, the total was lower than expected.

Players aren’t exactly thrilled by the news, but it could be worse. When asked if the company intended to do an Apex Legends 2.0, Wilson said “no”, going on to explain that the second version of a game typically isn’t as successful as the first. That’s not to say that they never are, but as many gamers know, there can be a lot of downsides to creating a whole new game that players have to want to move to.

The options often come down to splitting the player base or shutting down the original, causing players to lose a lot of their progress from the first game. As Wilson noted, “any time [they] cause a global player community to have to choose between the investments they’ve made to date and future innovation and creativity” it’s never a good place for the community to be. That said, they’ll have to figure something out if they want players to continue to be happy giving them money.
