DOTA 2 Shifts Away From The Battle Pass Going Into 10-Year Anniversary
It's not entirely gone, but the battle pass as DOTA 2 players know it is going away.
The DOTA 2 ten-year anniversary is upon us, and there are plenty of fun things in the works for the anniversary. With ten years under their belts, the MOBA's team has taken time to reflect on the past, and where the future might lead.
Over on the DOTA 2 site they have posted a long history of the Compendium, which grew into the battle pass players are familiar with today. The battle pass grew in scope and became the way new content was delivered to the game. Earlier this year, however, the DOTA 2 team tried something different and dropped the New Frontiers patch, a patch that could not have happened if all of their attention was focused on battle pass content... especially when "most players never buy a battle pass" anyway.
Going forward, DOTA 2 will be continuing the path started with New Frontiers, building a variety of content and features which will be delivered in different ways. The team says this change will result in more diverse content for the game.
When it comes to The International, they are no longer calling the associated content a battle pass. What it will be called remains to be seen, maybe they go back to just calling it The Compendium. Either way, they're shifting away from the giant reward line of cosmetics. The DOTA 2 devs believe that freeing new content from the restraints of the battle pass will help them create fun ideas of all scales and shapes.
