Despite What You May Have Thought, Riot Is Still Working On Its MMORPG
The confirmation comes directly from Marc Merrill.
Riot Games fans would be forgiven for thinking that the company’s planned MMORPG wasn’t happening anymore. After all, the developer announced back in March that they were changing direction on the project and going silent for a few years while they work on it. This was followed up by layoffs, with 32 members of the League of Legends team being let go earlier this month. Taken into account together, players wouldn’t necessarily be incorrect in thinking that it could mean bad things for some of the projects at the company.
However, there’s good news for those who have been waiting – and will continue to wait – patiently for the MMORPG to happen. During the Worlds stream, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer Marc Merrill was asked about the status of the MMO. His response was short but pretty clear. The team is “working hard on it” and it’s the project he spends the most time on. He also goes on to state that the team “has a great direction now” and plenty of momentum. Before you ask, no, he didn’t give any kind of timeline, but considering the last thing they’d said about it was that they’d be going quiet, that’s to be expected.
