Concord Crashed And Burned So Hard It's Going Offline Friday And Refunds Are Being Given
Wow, Sony just REALLY doesn't see any value in the game being F2P....maybe.
When sales numbers are as low as some analysts think they were and your Steam player count never breaks the 1K players mark, you know your hero shooter is in for a rough time. That's before you have a box fee that's required for you to even get into a game whose genre is comprised of mostly F2P titles.
Sony's Concord learned that lesson the VERY hard way and is now shutting the game down on September 6th. That's this Friday...three days from today...less than 2 weeks after launch. This doesn't necessarily mean its the end for Concord, but it very well could be.
It seems the team at Firewalk Studios wants to rethink Concord's future. That could mean changes in design, monetization, fundamentals, or hell, it could just go away forever. We saw MultiVersus do a similar "shut down and rethink", so it's not impossible to come back, but Concord has so much negative attention right now that I have to believe if it came back it would have a new name at minimum. Honestly, I think this is just the end for this one. I don't believe it was JUST the box fee that made players skip Concord.
I mean, the F2P beta never broke 3K Steam players. Hero shooters are a crowded genre and if you don't set yourself apart in a meaningful way, you'll have nothing but an uphill climb. But I digress.
From the team, "Therefore, at this time, we have decided to take the game offline beginning September 6, 2024, and explore options, including those that will better reach our players. While we determine the best path ahead, Concord sales will cease immediately and we will begin to offer a full refund for all gamers who have purchased the game for PS5 or PC."
The Epic Games Store and Steam will start processing these refunds and refunds will be processed by Sony for anyone who bought the digital version via the PlayStation Store or PlayStations Direct. Refunds from Sony could take 30-60 days to show on your statement. If you don't have the account you used to purchase the game anymore, you'll get a PlayStation Wallet credit.
If you actually went out and bought a physical version somewhere, you'll need to hit up your retailer for a refund.
Oof.
