Chris Metzen Game Direction Philosophy

We’re about three months out from World of Warcraft’s 20th anniversary and the launch of the first part of the Worldsoul Saga, The War Within, is next week. It’s pretty close, although, for those anticipating the expansion, it probably seems a long way off – something that it seems Chris Metzen can sympathize with as he mentioned in a discussion with The Instance’s Scott Johnson how some things seem like they took place forever ago and then sometimes they feel like it was minutes ago.

Metzen sat down with Johnson to discuss his philosophy on the creative direction of the Warcraft franchise, particularly the MMORPG World of Warcraft as it nears its 20-year mark. He discusses his return to the project, how things had changed while he was away, and how he had to work to combine his style with how the teams work now.

When discussing the upcoming WoW expansion, he noted that he wanted to bring all the big characters together. However, the team had already been working on what would become The War Within for several months and determined it would be impossible. Thus, he came up with the plan of expanding on that and creating a full three-part saga, the first of which will drop on August 26th.
