Call Of Duty Fan Project X Labs Shuts Down For Good After Receiving Cease And Desist From Activision
Things are not looking too bright for the future of the game's modding community.
Another Call of Duty fan project bites the dust.
Activision has taken action against X Labs, the team behind the popular Modern Warfare 2 modded project called “IW4X.” They announced operations have closed permanently after receiving a cease and desist demand from the company behind the shooter franchise.
Today, we have received a Cease & Desist letter on behalf of Activision Publishing in relation to the X Labs project. We are complying with this order and shutting down all operations permanently. Thank you all for your support over the years.

X Labs had been running dedicated servers for modded versions of older Call of Duty games for years without legal obstruction. The project was seen as a harmless fan endeavor that enhanced the Call of Duty community, but it is worth noting the team was accepting money from folks via Patreon.
