Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene Leaves PUBG Studio Krafton
Will continue work on Prologue, described as "an exploration of new technologies and gameplay."
When PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds officially shortened its title to PUBG: BattleGrounds, we thought it was an odd -- and grammatically redundant -- move. Now we might have a better idea of why it was done, as PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan Greene, is leaving Krafton and the PUBG team to form his own studio.
"Today, I'm excited to take the next step on my journey to create the kind of experience I've envisaged for years," Greene said in a statement. "Again, I'm thankful for everyone at Krafton for supporting my plans, and I'll have more to reveal more about our project at a later date."
That "project" is Prologue, which we saw a brief teaser of two years ago but nothing since. Greene was working on it for Krafton as part of its PUBG Special Projects division and his new company, PlayerUnknown Productions -- which Krafton has a minority stake in -- will continue the work.
The website for the company lists a few lofty mission statements and goals: to "explore new possibilities of interaction and connection within the game space" and "change the way games are made." Prologue itself is described as "an exploration of new technologies and gameplay. Our aim with this game is to give players unique and memorable experiences, each and every time they play." That's not much to go on, and a lot of game developers have said similar things while falling flat with their execution, but given Greene's successes, first with DayZ battle royale mods, H1Z1, and later PUBG, I'm willing to give him a shot.
