Bobby Kotick Takes The Stand In Microsoft FTC Trial, Says Removing CoD From PS Would Cause "Player Revolt"
Kotick says Call of Duty makes 2 times the money on PlayStation when compared to Xbox.
As expected, Call of Duty was the big focus of Activision CEO Bobby Kotick's testimony as he took the stand for the Microsoft FTC trial. The argument from Sony... via the FTC... seems to continue to remain centered around Call of Duty despite the plethora of other IPs and markets involved in the purchase.
According to IGN, Kotick testified that removing Call of Duty from the PlayStation platform "would alienate over 100 million monthly active players". Kotick went on to say that the removal of Call of Duty from PlayStation would be very detrimental to their business.
Kotick argued that PlayStation would be just fine following an Activision purchase by Microsoft due to their "enormous competitive advantage".
“Sony is the most successful consumer electronics company of all time," Kotick said. "They have distribution in every country, every small town, everywhere in the world.”
Kotick also noted that degrading the PlayStation version of Call of Duty just didn't make any sense. During the proceedings, it was said that COD revenue on PlayStation was 2x that of Xbox. Kotick admitted that he didn't like the prototype version of COD on the Switch and thought it wouldn't sell, which time has proven wrong with over 100 million units sold. Monthly active users were said to be 100 million with mobile gamers leading the charge followed by PC and consoles.
The drama will continue for a while longer and we'll keep you up-to-date on all the latest happenings as they occur.
