Blizzard Is (Or At Least Was) Working On A 3rd Attempt To Create A StarCraft Shooter Game
Ghost and Ares didn't go all that swimmingly, but maybe it isn't worth giving up on?
Bloomberg's Jason Schreier has a new book coming out on October 8th. Titled Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, the book looks back at the fabled gaming company's history, where they are now post-numerous controversies, and where they could be headed in the future with Microsoft. A few days ago I gave my thoughts on an adapted excerpt released that revealed why Co-founder Mike Morhaime actually departed the company.
While I am sure there are a ton of "neat" gaming things discussed in the book, Schreier says his purpose for writing the book wasn't exactly to spill tea. Instead, talking to IGN's Podcast Unlocked, Schreier says the book "...was very much to tell a story and focus on stuff that had happened."
However, some tidbits are making the rounds in the news, including a brief discussion on the podcast about a potential StarCraft shooter game. “Most of the developers were laid off, while a few would remain with Hay to begin incubating, of all things, a new StarCraft shooter. Perhaps after StarCraft Ghost and Ares, the third time would be the charm,” reads a section of the book. "Hay" refers to Dan Hay who left Ubisoft and went to Blizzard and was originally heading up the now cancelled survival game the company was working on earlier this year.
Schreier does acknowledge that the game may not be in development now, but it was at least in that state when the book was being written. Anything could have happened to the project in the time it took to edit the book and get it ready for publication. "Which is [to say] yes, they are working on a StarCraft shooter, StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard,” says Schreier.
Could it actually come to fruition this time around? It's an interesting thought, and one Blizzard apparently just can't let go of if they're willing to give it another go.
I'd still love to see it happen, what about you?
