Ark: Survival Evolved Creators Filed The DMCA That Got Myth Of Empires Booted From Steam
Angela Game founder worked for Snail Games, is accused of using Ark source code in Myth of Empires.
A few days ago, war sandbox game Myth of Empires was removed from Steam following what developer Angela Game identified as a DMCA takedown. Initial rumors pegged Conqueror's Blade developer Booming Tech or its publisher My.Games as the entity that filed the claim, but both companies, as well as Angela Game, denied the accusations.
Now we know who is behind the DMCA takedown, and -- if their claims are true -- they might have good reason for it.
PCGamer is reporting that Ark: Survival Evolved developer Studio Wildcard, along with its publisher, Snail Games, filed the takedown request, saying that they became "understandably concerned" following the launch of Myth of Empires. Angela Game was founded in 2020 by a former employee of Snail Games China, "who had access to the Ark source code." According to Snail Games, Ark and Myth of Empires share many similarities, including "hundreds of matching class, variable, and function names in a preliminary analysis, which they say confirms that the Ark source code was used in Myth of Empires."
Angela Game has denied the accusations, saying that it "fully owns all rights and property associated with Myth of Empires." The game still cannot be purchased on Steam but remains available for those who have already purchased it. Even that might not last for much longer, however, as Snail Games has asked hosting services to stop supporting the game.
