Apex Legends Revamps Battle Pass: Removes Option To Buy With Coins And Divides Seasons Into 2 Splits
Yeah, needless to say players are not happy at all.
Ok, we've got some news for you that most Apex Legends players aren't going to like. At all.
The battle royale from Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts is pulling a massive revamp of how their season battle passes work. On the surface, there is SOME good in this change. First, the seasons will now be broken into two different "splits." These sprints are shorter, 60 levels rather than the 100 in the previous passes, and their rewards have been revamped seeing a lot of unused rewards stripped from the pass. Passes will still offer some AC rewards and will have a "free" tier, as usual.
So far, so good, right? Smaller pass (kinda), better rewards, easier to keep in line with Ranked play? Cool.
Here's the curveball that has players furious:
This effectively increases the cost of each season if you want the pass for both splits in the season.
AND...
You can no longer buy the season pass with AC (cash shop currency). New passes are only available via a cash purchase starting at $9.99 USD. The reason given? "The decision to move from AC to real world currency is not one that we made lightly, but it does allow us to decrease the price of Premium+ for our community." Most players view this as a "total EA" move. Breaking the pass into 2, charging for each, and no longer letting you use AC earned in previous passes to buy the next pass.
Apex Legends will be letting players check out the first pass for free so they can give feedback. You can earn the premium pass for Season 22's first split for free by completing a few challenges in the first 2 weeks of the season.
The official post does say that "This announcement may change as we listen to community feedback and continue developing and evolving our Live Service & Content." If the replies on the team's X post or the calls for boycotts on the Apex Legends reddit is anything to go by...maybe we'll see changes coming quickly.
Just remember, that even if they do walk back the cash requirement for purchase, they're still breaking the season into 2 splits at a higher price point if you want the passes for the entire season. No matter what they may or may not "roll back", you saw what they wanted to do.
