Video Game Workers CWA

A new union supporting workers in the North American video game industry has launched. Named “United Videogame Workers – CWA” the new organization, part of the Communication Workers of America, is a “direct-join organization” that supports workers in all areas of the industry. That includes designers, QA testers, artists, writers, and even freelancers.

As stated on the union’s website, its mission “is to take back [the] lives, [the] labor, and [the] passion from those who treat [video game workers] like replaceable cogs; to empower workers; to link arms with the laid off, with the freelancer, with the disillusioned contractor, with the disenfranchised and the marginalized, with the workers laboring invisibly to keep [the] industry afloat”. The ultimate goal is to create a union “to fight the whims of CEOs and private equity vultures”.

Among the many goals mentioned on the site is drafting a video game worker bill of rights to set standards. It will address hiring inequality, crunch, and other issues.

Those wanting to find out more about the union can find the details on the official site. For those attending GDC, representatives of the organization can be found there at booth C1701.

Today, we are announcing the formation of United Videogame Workers-CWA, an industry-wide union formed by @codecwa.bsky.social and @cwaunion.bsky.social 💪🎮 We're launching at #GDC2025 this morning to build a video game industry that works for us. We're done playing.
