UPDATED: A Lawsuit From Nintendo Didn't Stop Palworld From Ninja Launching On The PS5 Just Now
We knew it was coming, but didn't know it would come today.
Look, getting sued by Nintendo is never "good" news. Even if you think the company may not have a case in any given situation, that doesn't mean the challenge of taking on their lawyers (and the cash behind them) isn't unnerving for anyone. Last week, Pocketpair became the latest company to get a filing sent to their offices as Nintendo alleges that their game Palworld infringes on a number patents Nintendo holds.
While Pocketpair wasn't initially sure what patents they are meant to have infringed upon, it could be this one for a character throwing an object to catch a monster in a video game. That patent hasn't yet been granted in the U.S., but it was granted in Japan, where the suit has been filed. However, the upcoming legal battle didn't stop the Pocketpair team from launching their monster-raising game on Sony's PlayStation 5 today during the State of Play stream.
That's right. In true ninja launch fashion, Palworld showed off a new trailer (below) at today's Sony State of Play presentation and closed with the old "Out Now" flag. If you've wanted to get your monster fun on on the PS5, hop in now...you never know where things will end up at this point.
This is also just after Pocketpair inked a deal with Sony to bring the IP outside of the video game world.
As of this writing, the game isn't showing up on the PS Storefront yet but we expect it to be there shortly. (It's up now.)
UPDATE 9/25/2024: According to the Palworld Japan X account, the launch in Japan on the PS5 "hasn't been decided" yet. While this is likely due to the lawsuit mentioned above, they stopped short of giving a direct reason.
