5 MMORPGs That Let You Create Your Perfect World
Make your impact on the world around you.
Creating or changing the world around you is something all MMORPG players dream of doing. Single-player games allow you to do this quite often, but the very nature of MMOs makes it very difficult to allow players to affect real change in the world.
In this list, we're looking at some of the MMOs out there that let you shape the world around you in one way or another. Some are heavily player-driven economies, others literally let you build the world. If you want to make an impact on the world you're playing in, these MMOs should be right up your alley.
EVE Online
EVE Online is the title that came up the most when looking at MMORPGs where you can influence the world around you. Sure, you can't go around altering the universe itself, but your actions can heavily influence the state of the game. Huge player-driven wars take place all the time, with huge corporations rising and falling as a result. In EVE, you have the freedom to play how you want and your actions can have a lasting impact on the other players around you.
Wurm Online
Wurm Online is a sandbox MMORPG that lets you take part in building the world and your actions influence everything around you. Craft, adventure, build yourself a home, or be part of a settlement. Wurm lets you do whatever you want, wherever you want, whenever you want. As a sandbox game that's what it's all about, interacting and altering the world around you.
Palia
You can create your own perfect little cozy world in Palia, and explore everything the game has to offer. Palia calls itself an ever-evolving adventure, and your actions can help shape the world around you. It's a community sim where you can do what you want, and build your world the way you like it. Just remember that as of this writing, the game is still actually in open beta and while it calls itself an "MMO" it isn't as large scale player-wise as the name implies.
Albion Online
Much like EVE Online, Albion Online is all about affecting the world by the professions you choose and interacting with the game's economy. Don't get it twisted, there are faction wars that let you construct or attack defensive structures that players have to build and maintain in order to defend their territory. Albion is expanding its fortifications too, giving players more agency in what they build and how they choose to upgrade those defenses.
Ashes Of Creation
Let's switch gears to something upcoming rather than an active game. Ashes of Creation is making some big promises, with player actions that impact the world state in both small and large ways. You might influence the weather when you're taking on a world boss, or beating that world boss might set off a cataclysmic event in an area. The node system looks like it could be an intriguing way to change the world around you by building communities out in the world. We'll just have to wait and see if AoC can live up to its promises, but what they've shown so far looks promising for those who want to have an impact on the world around them.
And that's our list! Let us know what your favorite MMO is that lets you affect the world around you down in the comments.
