MMO Events

As a general rule, any game with an ongoing online presence is going to boast events. For some, it’ll just be an excuse to add new things to the game’s store in the hopes of getting people to spend money. For other games, it’s a pretty big affair. The events really are events, and some of them even have a lasting impact on the game.

That said, even some of the smaller events can be pretty neat, offering players something different from what they might find in other games.

We’ve decided to list some of our favorite events in this post. They range from just being cool because the devs use them to celebrate their players to events that will change the game’s world.

World of Tanks Holiday Ops

When it comes to Christmas events, World of Tanks has one of the wilder ones. Perhaps this should be expected from a game about tanks. Each year Wargaming teams up with a different celebrity – generally action movie actors, create fun cinematic trailers, and engage in all kinds of mayhem in order to earn a big reward. Players are also rewarded with gifts during a twelve-day period known as the “12 Days of Tankmas”. And if that’s not enough, there are snowball fights… but with tanks.

Fortnite’s World-Changing End Of Season Events

Fortnite is known for its events, particularly with the game hosting music concerts. But the kind of events we’re talking about here are world-changing events that happen at the end of the battle royale’s seasons. These events continue the game’s narrative in big ways. When a season ends and a new one begins, players can be faced with minor or major season-change events. These potentially include catastrophes that change the game’s landscape. One even flipped the island upside down. The cool thing about these events is that they’re one-offs that almost everything stops for. If you aren’t in the game when they happen you’ll have to watch a YouTube recording to see what went down.

Final Fantasy XIV Rising Event

Final Fantasy XIV Anniversary Event

Final Fantasy XIV isn’t exactly known for big events. In general, they consist of about five minutes of story that functions as an excuse to give players some rewards. But there is one event that stands out – not because it’s big, but because it’s something the MMORPG’s director does to deliver a special message to players. During the anniversary Rising event, players still complete a small story quest. But, at the end of the quest line, the player’s character will often be pulled into a different dimension where they will meet with Yoshi-P for a brief period. During this meeting,g he typically offers his appreciation to the Warrior of Light and offers a message of hope. It’s nothing big, but it is touching.

Guild Wars 2’s Super Adventure Festival

When Guild Wars 2 first introduced the Super Adventure Box in 2013, it was an April Fools joke. Players entered a special dungeon built on an 8-bit platformer theme. It turned out to be incredibly popular and ArenaNet decided to keep it around. In 2016, it was turned into the Super Adventure Festival and has come back every year since. With it offering players different modes and rewards, it remains an anticipated event.

Star Citizen Invictus Launch Week

Every year, in May, Star Citizen likes to show off new ships and maybe encourage new players to join the game. To do this they – or rather the in-game organization United Empire of Earth Navy – host Invictus Launch Week, otherwise known as Fleet week. It’s a large affair both in-game and out with different ships being highlighted over several days and players being able to test the ships themselves at the end. It has the feel of a big affair that a lot of other game events don’t have.

Genshin Impact Summer Events

This one’s an honorable mention since Genshin Impact falls into that “not an MMO” territory but does have a bit of multiplayer. The thing is, though, that HoYo puts a lot of narrative effort into all of their holiday events and the summer event may be the biggest of all. For the summer events, HoYo creates an all-new zone with story, sidequests, a myriad of puzzles, and more. The story ties in with the rest of the game in some way and all the summer quests are linked. It’s an insane amount of work on the developer’s part for something that will cease to exist in a few weeks and never return. Yes, there’ll be other summer events, but that summer event won’t ever be back.
