6 MMOs That Can Be Played On Mac
It may not be the most popular platform for gaming, but that doesn’t mean Mac doesn’t have MMO games.
Apple’s Mac computers are often overlooked as gaming devices. That’s not exactly shocking, considering the fact that the devices used to be built using their own variety of processors and Apple has always been notorious for walling in the systems. It worked out well for users in some ways. The computers were always optimized the same and they suffered less hacking. But it still had its downsides – one of those being that few companies developed their games for the platform and if they did they were often shuffled to another developer to port them – eventually.
Things have changed a bit over the years. Macs now run on Intel processors and some developers are putting effort into creating games for it. That means there are more options for fans of the devices when it comes to gaming – although still not as many as they may like.
We’ve compiled a short list of MMOs that are currently available on the platform. Some of them are games that rolled out on Mac and Windows at the same time. Most are games whose developers later decided to offer the game on Mac.
RuneScape
One of the longest-running MMORPGs, Jagex’s RuneScape has a lot of content to offer players. That kind of happens when you’ve been around since 1999. Moreover, it’s available on just about everything anyone would want to play a game on. So, of course, it makes sense that the game is on Mac as well.
World of Tanks
World of Tanks is another game that’s available on just about every platform. The war strategy game developed by the aptly named Wargaming has the benefit of constant content updates – many of them crossovers of one type or another. The developers are always adding new historically accurate vehicles and weapons. As an added bonus for war history buffs, the company often supports restoration efforts on vehicles used in wars for museum purposes.
Rust
This one’s for those survival game enthusiasts. You know the drill. You start out naked on an island. No tools, no food. You have to find a way to survive while avoiding everything wanting to kill you. The game, developed by Facepunch Studios, has been running for 11 years and has been updated hundreds of times. It’s a good time for people who like to punish themselves.
World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft was THE fantasy MMORPG for a long time. One of the reasons for that is that it’s one of the very few that offered a Mac version at launch, in a time when Mac was almost always overlooked for gaming. That’s not to say that there weren’t games for Mac at the time. Aspyr was busy porting single-player EA titles at the time. But multiplayer games were hard to come by.
Eve Online
Eve Online was another game that launched on Mac from the start. But, between it rolling out in a limited area, waiting four years to go global, and the fact that it’s not exactly a casual game, it didn’t take the MMORPG crown. That said, it does what it does really well, and players who are looking for that kind of thing can easily play it on the Mac platform.
Path of Exile
Grinding Gear Games’ popular free-to-play ARPG joined the ranks of Mac games when the developer launched a Mac-specific client a few years back. They did have a bit of trouble getting it running, but it’s going fine now and is available to download via Steam.
